Lions Baseball Gets Late Run To Edge University of Fort Lauderdale 5-4 Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After leading for more than half the game, Florida Memorial University had to rally back from one-run deficit, getting the go-ahead run on a Luis Velandia sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to come away with a 5-4 win over a plucky University of Fort Lauderdale team Tuesday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Field.

How It Happened
  • FMU jumped out a 3-0 lead through the third inning after manufacturing a pair of runs in the first and a single run in the third inning.
  • The Lions held that lead going into the top of the fifth inning.
  • Fort Lauderdale got the better of Florida Memorial starting pitcher Gianthony Didimizzio in the fifth, getting four hits and ultimately played four runs – including one on a Lions error.
  • Florida Memorial head coach Florentino Burgos went to Alejandro Suarez in relief of Didomizzio and Suarez ended up pitching 1 and a third innings before Burgos gave the ball to freshman Aubrey Yarbrough.
  • The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, getting a leadoff triple from Nathan Harris followed by a single to center field that brought Harris home and tied the game.
  • FMU got another rally going in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases – after the Eagles intentionally walked Fernando Vila – setting up Velandia for his sac fly that brought Harris home.
  • Yarbough and the Lions defense shut the door on Fort Lauderdale in the top of the ninth, turning a double play on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt and forcing a fly out on the final batter to cement the 5-4 win.
