3-Seed Lions WBB Goes Cold Late, Falls To 2-Seed Webber International In SUN Tournament Semifinals

LAKELAND, Fla. – 3-seed Florida Memorial University saw its nine-point (52-43) advantage evaporate over the final six minutes of the fourth quarter as it went completely cold from the field allowing 2-seed Webber International University to rally back and hand the Lions a 68-60 defeat Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Sun Conference Championship Tournament at Southeastern University's Furnace Gym in Lakeland, Florida.

2-seed Webber International will take on NAIA National and Sun Conference No. 1 seed Southeastern University in the Sun Conference Tournament championship game Saturday back in SEU'S Furnace Gym.

How It Happened
  • FMU extended its fourth quarter lead to 52-43 after Monique Esbrand sank a pair of free throws with 6:06 left in the game.
  • Following Esbrand's free throws, the Lions saw its offense lose all of its momentum – ultimately going 2-for-10 from the field over the final six minutes.
  • Florida Memorial also had three turnovers was just 3-of-5 from the free throw line during that stretch.
  • Webber International outscored the Lions 25-8 in the final six minutes – as it went 6-for-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point range in the fourth quarter.
  • The Lions led by as many as 14 late in the second quarter, as they held WIU to just 7 points in the second.
  • While FMU's shooting numbers weren't overly impressive in the first half (40 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range), those numbers looked admirable compared to the team's second half shooting percentage of 25 percent from the field and 18 percent from three-point range.
  • Of Florida Memorial's four highest per-game scorers – all of whom came into the game averaging double figures – only one, Chantel Barnett, finished with double-digit points Friday.

  • Barnett finished with 13 points and was 4-of-9 from the field but 2-for-3 from three-point range.
