Florida Memorial Baseball Can’t Topple Chestnut Hill Saturday, Drops Weekend Series

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Sometimes a team "just doesn't have it", and Florida Memorial University just didn't have it this weekend as it dropped Saturday's single game against visiting NCAA Division-II opponent Chestnut Hill College (Pa.) 19-5 – completing a sweep loss in the home three-game weekend series at Harry T. Moore Field.

How It Happened
  • FMU fell into a 6-0 hole through the first two innings.
  • The Lions did show gumption in the third inning, plating five runs to get back into the game.
  • A Rafael Ferrara single followed by a Ulises Rodriguez double sparked the rally, Yunior Sanchez and Nathan Harris drove in runs on sacrifice plays, and Fernando Vila hit a 2-RBI single during Florida Memorial's run.
  • Things fell apart for FMU in the fourth inning, where Chestnut Hill was able to produce 9 runs – partly because of its six hits in the inning but in large part due to the three errors the Lions committed.
  • The Griffins added another four runs in the top of the fifth while Florida Memorial remained scoreless over the final five innings.

Inside The Box Score
  • Luis Ruiz had a solid day at the plate for the Lions, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Ferrara went 2-for-2 Saturday.
  • Chestnut Hill had two doubles, three triples, and two home runs Saturday.
  • Vila was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

Analysis & Notes
  • Florida Memorial threw six different pitchers Saturday.
  • The Lions committed a season-high 5 errors.
  • FMU also surrendered a season-worst 19 hits to Chestnut Hill Saturday.
  • Florida Memorial has now lost four straight games to the Griffins – dating back to the 2020 season.
  • The Lions fall to 10-9 overall.
  • CHC improves to 5-8 overall.
