FMU Softball Drops Two Saturday Against Webber International

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – As everyone prepares to "spring forward" for the start of daylight savings time, Florida Memorial University didn't have enough spring to topple visiting Webber International University as the Lions dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader – and ultimately the weekend series – at Flamingo Park Pines.

The Lions dropped the first game 11-1 as rain threatened the final innings and fell 10-1 in the day's second game – giving WIU the series sweep in what was Florida Memorial's first-ever home conference weekend series.

How It Happened – Game One (WIU 11, FMU 1)
  • After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning FMU did respond by producing a run in the bottom of the inning.
  • Scarlett Montalvo got on base with a single through the right side and was able to cross home plate thanks to a Warriors error after an Alissa Griffin put the ball in play.
  • WIU took complete control of the game in the third inning, scoring five runs.
  • The Warriors tacked on another four runs through the fourth and fifth innings and activated the 8-run mercy rule – ending the game in the fifth inning.

How It Happened – Game Two (WIU 10, FMU 1)
  • Similar to game one, FMU saw Webber International score multiple runs early and responded with a single run in the same inning.
  • After the Warriors went up 4-0 in the top of the second, Florida Memorial produced a single run in the bottom of the inning.
  • McKenna Dawes got on base via a walk, moved over to second on a wild pitch, and was able to cross home plate on a Kayla Morales double to center field.
  • WIU went up 6-1 in the top of the third then completely pulled away from the Lions in the top of the sixth with an inside-the-park grand slam that put it up 10-1.
  • Florida Memorial couldn't produce any runs in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game there as the mercy rule had been activated.

Inside The Box Score – Game One
  • Montalvo had the more productive day of any FMU batter, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Zariah Spells went 1-for-2.
  • Bridgette Tuxbury got the start for the Lions and ended up taking the loss for her 5 innings of work.
  • Webber International had 11 total hits, including four extra-base hits.

Inside The Box Score – Game Two
  • Dawes led FMU, going 1-for-2 with a run scored.
  • Morales recorded the team's lone RBI.
  • Aashana Francis got the start on the mound in game two and threw a complete game (6 innings).

Analysis & Notes
  • Including Saturday's results, of Florida Memorial's six losses this season, five have ended early because the mercy rule was activated.
  • The four walks the Lions drew in Saturday's second game was the second-most they totaled in any game this season.
  • FMU falls to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the Sun Conference.
  • Webber International improves to 15-7 overall and 3-0 in the Sun Conference.
