Florida Memorial Softball Drops Weekend Series Opener At USC-Beaufort Friday; Has Second Game Suspended

BLUFTTON, S.C. – Florida Memorial University matched its second-highest total for runs in a single inning this season, but it was bit too late as it fell 13-4 to host University of South Carolina-Beaufort Friday at USCB's Richard Gray Sports Complex.

Friday was scheduled to be a doubleheader between the programs, and the teams began game two, but it was suspended in the top of the second inning as torrential downpours soaked the field. The Lions led 3-1 at the point of suspension and game two will resume from that point Saturday morning. The third game of the weekend series will also be played Saturday if the weather and field conditions permit.

How It Happened
  • FMU fell into a 5-0 hole by the end of the second inning and saw that deficit grow to 13-0 by the end of the fourth.
  • The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when the USCB pitcher hit Megan Perez with a pitch while the bases were loaded.
  • Florida Memorial was gifted another run two batters later as Samantha Triana drew a walk.
  • McKenna Dawes brought two runs home with a single up the middle to bring FMU within 13-4.
  • Camryn Gregory struck out swinging in what was the game's final at bat since South Carolina-Beaufort had already activated the 8-run mercy rule.

Inside The Box Score
  • Dawes went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Lions.
  • Triana was the other FMU player to register a hit, going 1-for-2 with a RBI and a walk.
  • All nine Sand Sharks batters recorded at least one hit Friday.
  • Florida Memorial started Bridgette Tuxbury on the mound, and she pitched 3.1 innings.

Analysis & Notes
  • FMU's four runs in the fifth inning Friday matched its second-highest single inning output. The Lions scored 6 runs in an inning during its win over Pennsylvania State University-Hazleton earlier this season.
  • The Lions fell to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the Sun Conference.
  • USCB improves to 13-9 overall and 4-0 in the Sun Conference.

Up Next
FMU will be back on the Sand Sharks' home diamond Saturday – resuming game two from the top of the second inning then playing game three – if the weather and field conditions permit.
