Hobley Hits Program's First Home Run; Florida Memorial Softball Drops Midweek Series Opener To Ave Maria Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University had some juice early – taking a 4-3 lead into the third inning thanks to a historic hit by Trinity Hobley – but saw it dry up over what would be the final three innings as it fell 12-4 in five innings to visiting Ave Maria University in the opening game of a three-game midweek series Tuesday afternoon at Carol City Park.

How It Happened
  • FMU held leads at two different junctures Tuesday: a 3-2 lead at the end of the first and a 4-3 lead at the end of the second inning.
  • The Lions took their second-inning lead on a leadoff solo inside-the-park home run by Trinity Hobley.
  • Ave Maria responded in the top of the third, getting two inside-the-park home runs of its own and an unearned run on an error to retake the lead.
  • The Gyrenes extended its lead in the top of the fourth by plating six runs to take a 12-4 lead and activate the 8-run mercy rule.
  • Florida Memorial went three-up, three-down in the final two innings and couldn't extend the game.
  • The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the first after Zariah Spells hit a single through the right side, scoring Scarlett Montalvo from second.
  • Samantha Triana hit a 2-RBI single to right to put FMU up 3-2 at the end of the first.

Inside The Box Score
  • Hobley, Spells, Triana, and Karah Atkins all went 1-for-2 Tuesday.
  • Triana led the team with her 2 RBI.
  • Aashana Francis recorded the Lions' one stolen base.
  • Bridgett Tuxbury started the game for FMU and threw 4 innings before being credited with the loss.
  • Ave Maria recorded 15 total hits Tuesday and had 9 left on base.

Analysis & Notes
  • Hobley's home run was the first home run in FMU softball history.
  • The two home runs hit Ave Maria was a season-worst for homers allowed in a single game.
  • Francis, listed as a pitcher, pinch-ran for the Lions Tuesday despite her upper extremity injury, which will likely keep her off the mound this week.
  • Florida Memorial fell to 1-10 overall and 0-7 in the Sun Conference.
  • The Gyrenes improve to 13-16 overall and 3-4 in the Sun Conference.
