Dixon Notches Program’s First Grand Slam; Lions Softball Drops Two In Doubleheader Against Ave Maria

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Success doesn't always have to be measured linearly – simply counting wins and losses. Success can also be measured in process, recognizing the incremental improvement of a budding program.

Florida Memorial University, playing its first softball season, continues to show signs of growth – evident in its play against in its home doubleheader against Ave Maria University that saw the team drop both games but also saw the Lions notch its first grand slam in program history as well as tie its previous single-game high for runs scored in an inning Wednesday at Carol City Park.

How It Happened – Game One (AMU 13, FMU 1)
  • After the teams played a scoreless first inning, Ave Maria took control by posting seven runs in the top of the second.
  • FMU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after Haylei Grand got on base with a textbook bunt and matriculated around the bases before scoring on a throwing error by the Gyrene's third baseman.
  • AMU produced another six runs in the top of the fifth, including a 3-run home run to take a 13-1 lead and activate the 8-run mercy rule – ending the game after the Lions went scoreless in the bottom of the fifth.

How It Happened – Game Two (AMU 16, FMU 6)
  • The Gyrenes jumped out first again, plating eight runs in the top of the third – getting half those runs on a grand slam by Cecilia Garrett.
  • Florida Memorial flashed its offensive moxie in the bottom of the third.
  • The Lions' rally was started by a Scarlett Montalvo single up the middle.
  • Zariah Spells got a single through the right side to get on and move Montalvo over to third.
  • FMU got runs on the next two at-bats – with Karah Atkins drawing a bases-loaded walk followed by an Emily Albelo single to cut the deficit to 8-2.
  • Lions head coach Pedro Herrera called for Jadlyn Dixon to pinch hit with the bases loaded and she rewarded his call – getting the barrel of her bat on a hanging pitch and sending deep to center field, clearing the bases, and allowing her to cross home plate for a grand slam.
  • Both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning.
  • Ave Maria would produce runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings – including home runs in the sixth and seventh – to take a 16-6 lead.
  • After producing four hits in the third, Florida Memorial would only notch one hits over the remainder of the game.

Inside The Box Score – Game One
  • Grand and Spells were the only Lions to record hits, each going 1-for-2.
  • Grand also accounted for the team's run scored.
  • Ave Maria pitcher Alissa Bolinger threw a complete game, allowing just 2 hits and striking out six.
  • Aashana Francis had 2 stolen bases in game one Wednesday.

Inside The Box Score – Game Two
  • Dixon was 1-for-1 with her grand slam and accounted for 7 putouts at first base – including an impressive stretching split to record an out.
  • McKenna Dawes, Spells, and Montalvo all went for 1-for-4.
  • Trinity Hobley, who recorded the program's first home run Tuesday, went 1-for-2 but left the game in the fourth inning.
  • The Gyrenes recorded 16 total hits, including three home runs and three doubles.

Analysis & Notes
  • Dixon's historic grand slam pairs with Hobley's homer from Tuesday to mark the first time in program history that FMU recorded multiple home runs in a three-game series.
  • Hobley, who started at first base, left the game in the fourth inning with an undisclosed injury but later returned as a pinch hitter.
  • While the final margin of Wednesday's second game was 10 runs, it marked the first time this season that the Lions had a game go a full seven innings.
  • Florida Memorial falls to 1-12 overall and 0-9 in the Sun Conference.
  • Ave Maria improves to 15-16 overall and 5-4 in the Sun Conference.
