FMU Softball Drops Two In Doubleheader At No. 10 Coastal Georgia Friday

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Florida Memorial University played its first-ever games against a nationally-ranked opponent Friday, falling to No. 10 College of Coastal Georgia in the first two games of a three-game weekend series at Brunswick High School.
 
How It Happened – Game One (CCGA 16, FMU 1)
  • FMU trailed just 1-0 at the end of the first inning but saw that deficit swell to 11-0 in the second inning.
  • The Lions got on the board in the top of the third inning after Samantha Triana and Bridgette Tuxbury got singles and Emily Albelo was able to bring Triana home with a single to left field.
  • Coastal Georgia would score another four runs in the bottom of the third and tack on an additional run in the fourth to take a 16-1 lead.
  • The game ended after the top of the fifth inning as the 8-run mercy rule was active.
 
How It Happened – Game Two (CCGA 17, FMU 2)
  • Florida Memorial fell behind early again, going scoreless in the top of the first while the Mariners plated 10 runs – including a grand slam.
  • The Lions got on the board in the top of second thanks to a Karah Atkins solo home run.
  • FMU produced another run in the top of the third on a sacrifice bunt by Scarlett Montalvo that allowed Triana to charge to home plate.
  • CCGA scored six runs in the bottom of the second and one in the third to take the final 17-2 lead and end the game after five innings.
 
Inside The Box Score – Game One
  • Albelo had the team's RBI while going 1-for-2.
  • Heidy Olivo, Jadlyn Dixon, Tuxbury, and Triana all had one hit in game one.
  • Olivo's hit was a double.
  • Coastal Georgia totaled 15 hits – three doubles, a triple, and two home runs.
 
Inside The Box Score – Game Two
  • Atkins went 1-for-2 with her homer.
  • Triana was a perfect 1-for-1 with a run scored.
  • CCGA had five doubles and three home runs among its 12 hits.
  • Aashana Francis had a stolen base in game two.
 
Analysis & Notes
  • Atkins' home run was the first of her career at FMU.
  • With Atkin's homer, Florida Memorial has had players hit home runs in consecutive games for the first time in program history.
  • Florida Memorial is now 1-14 overall and 0-11 in the Sun Conference.
  • The Mariners improve to 24-2 overall and 5-1 in the Sun Conference.
