FMU Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Ave Maria Saturday, Drops Weekend Series 2-1

AVE MARIA, Fla. – Powered by an early offensive output in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Florida Memorial University took game one 9-5 over host Ave Maria University but couldn't generate that some scoring juice in the second game as it fell 4-3 – sealing a 2-1 series loss – Saturday afternoon at AMU's Bowie's Ballpark.
 
How It Happened – Game One (FMU 9, AMU 5)
  • FMU found an offensive rhythm from the very first batter – getting a double from Rohandry Javier.
  • The Lions ended up loading the bases then got on the board thanks to a Gyrenes fielding error then doubled its lead when Nathan Harris drew a bases-loaded walk.
  • Luis Ruiz put Florida Memorial up 4-0 with a 2-RBI single to left field and leadoff man Javier came back up in the inning and hit an RBI single to third base to put the Lions up 5-0.
  • FMU tacked on two more runs in the top of the second, capitalizing on a pair of Ave Maria errors.
  • The Lions manufactured another run in the top of the third, knocking Luis Velandia over two bases on groundouts before he was able to come home on a Gyrenes error.
  • Ave Maria was finally able to find a crack in Juan Hernandez's pitching performance in the bottom of the sixth, generating five runs to cut the Lions' lead to 8-5.
  • FMU got an insurance run in the top of the eighth, exploiting more AMU errors – a walk followed by a fielding error followed by a wild pitch – as Ulises Rodriguez came home on an Axel Gomez sacrifice fly.
  • Florida Memorial reliever Samuel Briceno held AMU scoreless over the final two innings to cement the 9-5 victory.
 
How It Happened – Game Two (AMU 4, FMU 3)
  • After falling into an 0-1 hole at the end of the first inning, FMU took a 2-1 lead thanks to a 2-RBI single by Harris.
  • Ave Maria responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, aided by a pair of defensive breakdowns by the Lions.
  • The Lions continued to trail 4-2 through the sixth inning until it got a small rally going culminating with Rodriguez knocking in a run on a single through the right side to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • Florida Memorial couldn't generate any viable offensive opportunities through the final three innings – sealing the Gyrenes' 4-3 win.

  • Javier, Gomez, and Ruiz all went 2-for-4; Gomez and Javier each had 1 RBI while Ruiz had 2.
  • Fernando Vila went 1-for-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
  • Rodriguez had 2 walks drawn and 2 runs scored.
  • Hernandez got the start for the Lions and ended up throwing 6.0 innings with 4 strikeouts to earn the win.
  • Ave Maria committed seven errors in game one while FMU had zero.
