FMU Baseball Tops Florida National 6-3 Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – While it wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing of wins, it still, was a win – a needed and potentially momentum-boosting win for Florida Memorial University, which defeated visiting Florida National University Thursday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Field.

A late addition to the schedule, Thursday's game was the Lions' second consecutive win over FNU in as many days.

How It Happened
  • After riding into the sixth inning tied at two, FMU was able to manufacture three runs in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game.
  • Ulises Rodriguez started the inning with a leadoff single and Nathan Harris was able to bring Rodriguez home a batter later with a deep double to center field.
  • Back-to-back defensive breakdowns by Florida National – a wild pitch followed by a throwing error by the third baseman – allowed Harris to cross home plate and give the Lions a 4-2 lead.
  • Rafael Ferrara hit a RBI single to left to punctuate the rally and put FMU up 5-2.
  • FNU threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases on freshman pitcher Aaron Knowles, who came in at the start of the inning in relief.
  • Knowles got out of the jam, forcing a groundout to end the inning and keep the Conquistadors off the board.
  • The Lions manufactured another run in the bottom of the eighth to go up 6-2.
  • Florida National plated an inconsequential run in the top of the ninth on a Lions error before Fernando Vila ended the game with his second strikeout of the inning.

Inside The Box Score
  • Luis Ruiz was the only FMU player with multiple hits Thursday, going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and a RBI.
  • Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored.
  • Axel Gomez finished 1-for-4 with a team-high 2 RBI.
  • Florida Memorial's pitchers recorded 16 total strikeouts, including 3 from Joselito Baez as he struck out the side in his 1.0 inning of work.
  • Lions skipper Florentino Burgos used nine pitchers and each one threw 1.0 inning.
  • FNU had 10 hits – compared to 7 for Florida Memorial – but was charged with 4 errors.

Analysis & Notes

  • Rohandry Javier continued his team-leading reached-base streak Thursday, extending it to 25 consecutive games.
  • Junior outfielder Jalen Young returned to the Lions' lineup Thursday after missing the past few games with a lower extremity injury. He played as the designated hitter (DH) and went 0-for-2.
  • Florida Memorial improves to 14-15 overall.
  • The Conquistadors fall to 4-27.
