Florida Memorial Softball Edged By Warner University In Pitcher’s Duel Friday

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Florida Memorial University played – arguably – its best defensive game of the season but couldn't string together enough positive plays at the plate as it fell 1-0 to host Warner University Friday night at WU's Daly Field.

How It Happened
  • Warner was able to manufacture what ended up being the game-winning run in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Royals had a batter get on by drawing a walk, the batter stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and was able to come home on an RBI single – Warner's only hit of the inning.
  • FMU only amassed three hits Friday and went three-up, three-down in four of the seven innings.
  • The Lions threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs after Heidy Olivo and Zariah Spells each reached on errors by the WU pitcher and Trinity Hobley hit an infield single.
  • Florida Memorial would leave the runners stranded as the next two batters struck out swinging and the third grounded out – ending the game.

Inside The Box Score
  • Olivo had a game-high 2 hits, going 2-for-3.
  • Hobley went 1-for-3.
  • Lions' starting pitcher Aashana Francis threw 2.0 innings and was credited with the loss as yielded the first inning run.
  • Bridgette Tuxbury pitched 4.0 innings in relief and gave up just two hits, had just two walks, and a had a strikeout.
  • Warner pitcher Tiffany Dodson threw a complete game with three hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

Analysis & Notes
  • The 1-run final deficit was the smallest margin of defeat for Florida Memorial this season.
  • Also, the four hits allowed Friday was the second-fewest hits allowed in a game this season. FMU had a no-hitter in its win against Pennsylvania State University-Hazleton.
  • Olivo's two hits made her the team leader for multi-hit games this season with three.
  • Hobley extended her reached-base streak to four games Friday and could tie and/or take the lead for the team-best mark if she reaches base in one or both of Saturday's games.
  • Florida Memorial falls to 1-24 overall and 0-19 in the Sun Conference.
  • Warner improves to 20-18 overall and 8-8 in the Sun Conference.
