FMU Softball Earns First Conference Win, Splits Doubleheader With Warner University Saturday

LAKE WALES, Fla. – After being narrowly edged out for a win Friday, Florida Memorial University broke through and earned its first-ever Sun Conference victory over the weekend, splitting Saturday's doubleheader – taking the first game 4-2 over host Warner University at WU's Daly Field.
 
The Lions dropped the second game of the day 6-4, giving the weekend series win to Warner.
 
How It Happened – Game One (FMU 4, WU 2)
  • FMU trailed 2-1 heading to the fifth inning.
  • The Lions tied the game at two when McKenna Dawes put the ball in play, reaching on a fielder's choice while Scarlett Montalvo – who reached on a walk – was able to score on an error by the Royals first basemen.
  • Haylei Grand gave Florida Memorial a 3-2 lead with an RBI single to right – scoring Aashana Francis.
  • Bridgette Tuxbury, who entered in relief during the first inning, kept Warner scoreless over the final three innings.
  • FMU got another rally going in the top of the seventh, getting consecutive hits from Grand and Heidy Olivo to bring home Montalvo – putting the Lions up 4-2.
 
How It Happened – Game Two (WU 6, FMU 4)
  • The Lions seemed to still have its momentum from game one, taking a 1-0 lead by the end of the first inning and holding a 3-1 lead in the third inning.
  • Zariah Spells brought home the two runs in the third with a single to deep center field.
  • Warner got multiple extra-base hits in the bottom of the fifth as it plated five runs to take a 6-3 lead.
  • Florida Memorial was able to manufacture a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Olivo to cut into the deficit but couldn't completely rally back.
 
Inside The Box Score – Game One
  • Grand and Olivo each had two hits – both going 2-for-4.
  • Grand had a run scored.
  • Samantha Triana was 1-for-3.
  • Montalvo had 2 runs scored and Francis had one.
  • Tuxbury ended up throwing 6.2 innings, allowing just one earned run and two strikeouts.
 
Inside The Box Score – Game Two
  • Dawes led the way, going 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored.
  • Olivo was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Spells had 2 RBI while going 1-for-2.
  • Reygan Nickerson pitched 2.2 innings and was given the loss.

  • FMU's win in game one of the doubleheader marked its first win against a Sun Conference opponent.

Up Next
The Lions will have a couple days off before it plays its final home games of the 2022 season – a three-game series against St. Thomas University beginning Thursday (April 21) at Miami Carol City Park.
