FMU Baseball Shuts Out Thomas University Saturday, Sweeps Weekend Series

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After picking up a pair of wins Friday, Florida Memorial University a much-needed sweep in the three-game weekend conference series against visiting Thomas University (Ga.), manufacturing a 4-0 shutout victory over the Night Hawks Saturday at Harry T. Moore Field thanks to a strong pitching performance from its pitching staff and timely hitting at the plate.
 
How It Happened
  • As it has in more than a fair share of games this season, FMU picked up a couple runs in the early innings – plating a run in the bottoms of the first and third innings.
  • Axel Gomez knocked in the first run of the day with an RBI single up the middle to put the Lions up 1-0.
  • Florida Memorial starting pitcher William Hiciano ended up throwing 5.0 shutout innings while striking out four.
  • Nathan Harris put FMU ahead 2-0 with a single to short in the third inning as a fielding error by Thomas allowed Rohandry Javier to trot to home plate and Harris to take second base on the throw.
  • Another Night Hawk defensive breakdown – a wild pitch – allowed Ulises Rodriguez to cross home plate in the bottom of the fifth and give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
  • Hiciano then relievers Joselito Baez and Samuel Briceno continued to keep the TU batters in check, totaling eight strikeouts while giving up just five hits.
  • Fernando Vila gave FMU its final 4-0 lead on a sacrifice fly that allowed Gomez to cross home plate in the bottom of the eighth.
