Florida Memorial Softball Drops Two Saturday, Loses Series In Sweep

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Playing its final home series of the 2022 season, Florida Memorial University couldn't generate the offense needed to upend visiting St. Thomas University Saturday, dropping both games in the day's doubleheader – 9-0 and 11-1 – at Miami Carol City Park.
 
How It Happened – Game One (STU 9, FMU 0)
  • FMU fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning.
  • Lions starting pitcher Aashana Francis held St. Thomas in check through the middle innings, keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard through the fifth inning.
  • Florida Memorial struggled to get to STU starting pitcher Kaitlin Spalding, only generating five total hits.
  • St. Thomas opened up the game in the sixth inning, plating six runs on four hits – including a 2-run home run by Maria Barranco – to take a 7-0 lead.
  • The Lions' deficit grew to 9-0 in the top of the ninth and, while they produced another two hits in the bottom of the inning, they couldn't knock in any runs.
 
How It Happened – Game Two (STU 11, FMU 1)
  • Florida Memorial's offensive woes continued in game two, going scoreless through the first four innings.
  • The Bobcats stayed hot at the plate, scoring runs in all but one inning.
  • Jadlyn Dixon put the Lions on the board in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double to left that brought Kayla Morales home.
  • STU pulled away in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs – including a solo homer by Destiny Pacetti – to take an 11-1 lead.

  • Morales and Dixon each had 2 hits; Dixon finished 2-for-3 with an RBI while Morales went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • St. Thomas recorded 12 totals hits, including five doubles.

  • Florida Memorial infielder and hit leader Heidy Olivo played in game one Saturday but was not in the lineup for game two.
  • STU notched a home run in each game of the weekend series.
  • The Lions end the season with a winless home record (0-15).
  • FMU falls to 2-28 overall and 1-23 in the Sun Conference.
  • The Bobcats improve to 19-22 overall and 9-15 in the Sun Conference.
