Lions Softball Drops Two Against Keiser University Friday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – It was a tale of two games in Friday's weekend series-opening doubleheader with Florida Memorial University falling 20-2 in game one then battling visiting Keiser University to a 9-4 defeat at Miami Carol City Park.
 
How It Happened – Game One (KU 20, FMU 2)
  • Errors and defensive breakdowns hurt FMU, which fell into a 10-0 hole through the first two innings.
  • Keiser University produced 14 hits and scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings.
  • The Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the third, getting RBIs from Jadlyn Dixon and Zariah Spells.
  • KU went up 20-0 after posting seven runs in the fourth inning and the game ended after five innings as the 8-run mercy rule was active.
 
How It Happened – Game Two (KU 9, FMU 4)
  • Florida Memorial held the Seahawks scoreless in the first half of the first inning and took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning thanks to a 2-RBI single through the right side by McKenna Dawes.
  • KU tied the game and took the lead in the top of the third, producing three runs.
  • The Lions chipped away at its deficit in the bottom of the third, cutting it to 4-3 after a Heidy Olivo double brought Trinity Hobley home.
  • Keiser scored another four runs in the top of the fourth and tacked on a single run in the top of the sixth to go up 9-3.
  • FMU threatened to produce runs in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with no outs after Dawes and Olivo reached on hits and Emily Albelo drew a walk.
  • The Lions only got one run out of that positive stretch, getting a Dawes across home plate on a fielder's choice, as the next three batters flied out, grounded out, and lined out respectively.
 
Inside The Box Score – Game One
  • Haylei Grand went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Hobley was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
  • Dixon and Spells each had an RBI.
  • The Lions were charged with five errors.
  • Nine of Keiser's 10 batters in game one recorded hits.
 
Inside The Box Score – Game Two
  • Dawes and Olivo each went 2-for-3.
  • Dawes had a team-high 2 RBI.
  • Hobley went 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored while Scarlett Montalvo went 1-for-3 with 1 run scored.
  • FMU starting pitcher Aashana Francis threw 4.0 full innings and was credited with the loss while Tuxbury pitched 3.0 innings in relief with 2 strikeouts.
  • Keiser University had 6 hits and 7 RBI.
 
Analysis & Notes
  • The 20 runs allowed in game one Friday was the most runs allowed by Florida Memorial this season.
  • Game one Friday also marked the third time this season the Lions committed five errors in a game – the season-worst mark.
  • With her performance Friday, Dawes moved in the second on the team in total hits (11) this season.
  • Hobley's runs scored put her in the No. 1 spot on the team with seven.
  • FMU fell to 1-22 overall and 0-17 in the Sun Conference.
  • Keiser University improved to 13-19-1 overall and 4-10 in the Sun Conference.

The Lions will return to their home diamond for the third game of the weekend series against Keiser University, Saturday (April 9) at 5 p.m.
