FMU Falls To No. 19 Keiser In Series Finale Monday, Misses Out On Conference Tournament Bid

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Call it a bad case of "The Monday's", but not much seemed to go right for Florida Memorial University in its series finale single game against visiting No. 19 Keiser University as it fell 8-1 Monday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Field.

Losing Monday gave Keiser a 2-1 series win and it cemented the Lions' fate of missing the Sun Conference Baseball Championship Tournament – as Florida Memorial needed to sweep the series to clinch a spot.

How It Happened
  • FMU fell behind 1-0 in the first inning after surrendering a solo home run to Keiser's Tim Bouchard – the Sun Conference's home run leader this season.
  • The Seahawks were able to put another three runs on the board in the top of the second aided by two walks and two pass-balls – one of which yielded an unearned run.
  • Florida Memorial put a single run on the board on a sacrifice fly by Fernando Vila, bringing home Luis Ruiz.
  • Keiser went up 7-1 in the top of seventh thanks to a 2-RBI double and put the Lions in an 8-1 hole with another single run in the top of the eighth.
  • FMU had just four hits and had batters strike out five times Monday.

Inside The Box Score
  • Rohandry Javier, Luis Ruiz, Yunior Sanchez, and Vila recorded hits.
  • Ruiz was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
  • Javier also recorded a stolen base.
  • Keiser University had 11 hits as a team, including three players with two hits each.
  • FMU used four pitchers. Juan Hernandez got the start and threw 1.2 innings while Willy Hiciano threw a team-high 4.1 innings and recorded 5 strikeouts.
  • Bouchard's homer gave him two home runs for the series and 19 home runs this season.

Analysis & Notes
  • Lions catcher Rafael Ferrara left the game in the eighth inning after sustaining an upper extremity injury.
  • FMU's four hits Monday tied – with two other instances – the team's season-low for hits in a game this season.
  • Monday also marked the second time this season that Florida Memorial had zero total errors in a three-game conference series – unfortunately, the team is 0-2 in those series.
  • Javier's stolen base was his team-leading 29th of the season.
  • Florida Memorial ends the regular season 23-21 overall and 10-14 (No. 7) in the Sun Conference.
  • No. 19 Keiser improved to 33-18 overall and 14-10 in the Sun Conference.

Up Next
FMU received an invitation to participate in the 2022 Tyson Foods Black College World Series, which is set to take place May 11-15 in Montgomery, Alabama, and will likely be one of the top seeds in the field of teams and will wait for the event's schedule to be set.
