MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial scored 35 first half points en route to a 49-22 thrashing of Warner at Betty T. Ferguson Stadium. Although both teams play in the Sun Conference, only the rematch in Lake Wales on Oct. 8 will count as a conference game. With the victory, the Lions set a record for single-season wins since re-launching the program three years ago.
The Lions (2-2) jumped out on top in the first quarter, scoring a total of three touchdowns to take a commanding 21-3 lead. Early in the contest, the Royals got in the red zone and looked to score, but a chip shot field goal attempt was blocked by the roaring Lions defense. On the next play, quarterback
Antoine Williams launched a 75-yard bomb to wide receiver
Keon Brown midway through the quarter for the first touchdown. After FMU's defense forced a three-and-out on the following possession, running back
George Young scampered into the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown run. Warner responded with a field goal late in the opening quarter before Williams found Brown for the second time on a 28-yard touchdown strike.
In the second quarter, linebacker
Christian Mable forced a fumble that was recovered by the Royals. Moments later the FMU defense blocked another field goal attempt right before Williams threw his third touchdown pass of the afternoon as he found
Nura Sales on a 6-yard pass to give the Lions a 28-3 lead.
On the ensuing drive, Williams found wide out
Markell Lee on a 16-yard pass before Young rushed for his second touchdown of the game on a 19-yard dash, giving the Lions a 35-3 lead at halftime. Before the break, the special teams unit blocked a punt while the defense ended the half with back-to-back sacks at the hands of Mable and teammates
Philman Roundtree and Isaiah Smith.
Florida Memorial finished with 468 yards of total offense while holding the Royals to just 268 total yards. The Lions produced a total of 25 first downs in the victory.
Williams finished the day 10-of-19 for 219 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Young generated 157 yards on the ground on 21 rushes, including two touchdowns.
FMU enters the bye week before returning to the gridiron on Saturday, October 1 as they face Keiser in the first Sun Conference contest of the season. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. in West Palm Beach, Fla.
