FMU survives thriller with 10-men in in 4-3 victory over Webber

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University went a man-down in the first half and still managed to survive, defeating Webber 4-3 at Dr. Lester Brown Park.

In the eighth minute, FMU midfielder Carlos Montenegro found the back of the net with a beautiful strike around the 18-yard box to give FMU a 1-0 lead. Webber responded minutes later with the equalizer from a penalty kick. FMU graduate student and Louisiana State University Shreveport transfer Adam Gonzalez scored a brilliant header off a corner kick from teammate Juan Rizo in the 27th minute, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead.

However, another mishap from FMU allowed Webber International a golden opportunity to tie the match with another penalty kick, which they converted just minutes before the halftime whistle, bringing the score to 2-2 at the break. The foul in the penalty area led to freshman Thomas Bailey's second yellow card in less than 10 minutes as he was ejected from the game with a red card.

In the second half, FMU midfielder and LSU-S transfer Carlo Lopez scored a go-ahead goal on beautiful through-ball from fellow Lion Frank Sanchez, giving FMU the 3-2 lead in the 63rd minute of action. Minutes later, Sanchez pressured a Webber defender deep in the final third, took possession of the ball, then dribbled towards the goal before striking it perfectly over the Warriors goalkeeper, scoring what eventually became the match-winner in the 71st minute.

FMU goalkeeper Juan Mora, who is this week's SUN Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Ave Maria (3-1 victory) and Florida National (0-0 draw), finished with one save and allowed three goals; two from the spot.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday, October 23 as they travel to Lake Wales, Fla. to face Warner. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Royals Field.
