Lions softball splits doubleheader vs. NCAA D2 HBCU foe Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. | Florida Memorial split a doubleheader with fellow Florida HBCU and NCAA DII foe Edward Waters University.,

Game 1
FMU 2 - EWU 6

The Lions scored the first run in the game in the top of the third inning when Breanna Reyes singled to left field, bringing home Kayla Jade Morales. However, in the bottom stanza, Edward Waters responded with four runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Lions and Tigers remained scoreless for the next three innings before Edward Waters added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a 6-1 lead.

The Lions answered back in the top of the seventh when Heidy Olivo generated an RBI-single to center field, scoring Morales. However, Reyes followed with a pop-up to first base before Ciara Justice grounded out to end the contest.

Game 2
FMU 5 - EWU 3

The Lions controlled the game from start to finish, pouring in three runs in the opening inning as center fielder Ciara Justice generated an RBI-single to center field, allowing Breanna Reyes to touch home plate for the first run of the contest. Moments later, freshman Leneaya Silva produced a two RBI-double to center field, scoring Justice and Mariana Gongora, giving FMU a 3-0 lead.

However, the Tigers responded in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three quick runs to tie the game 3-3.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Lions answered back with two runs to seal the deal as Justice and Silva came across home plate.

Junior transfer pitcher Emma Silva earned the victory, striking out three Edward Waters batters while allowing just one earned run and five hits as she pitched a complete game.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday, February 28 as they travel to Viera, Fla. for a doubleheader against Oakland City & Goshen. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at USSSA Space Coast Complex.
