Late comeback attempt falls short in 8-6 loss to No.5 Webber

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial falls in the series finale against No. 5 Webber, losing 8-6 at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.

The Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and were on the verge of a fantastic finish, but the comeback charge was cut short.

FMU's Ernie Farrell hit a two-RBI single to score teammates Eduardo Perez and Raymond Rivera in the bottom of the second, giving FMU the early lead. the Lions continued the scoring, first off an RBI from Ivan Zambrano that scored senior Luis Ruiz followed by a Rivera RBI that scored Zambrano, both in the bottom of the third. The Warriors began chipping away at the lead, first with three runs in the top of the fourth followed by a four-run top of the fifth to retake a build a sizable lead over the Lions.

A run from Webber in the top of the sixth meant FMU trailed 8-4 with three innings to go. With one shot left in the bottom of the ninth, the Lions mounted a late charge, first by a Ruiz sacrifice RBI that scored Farrell. A Rivera walk with loaded bases scored shortstop Ulises Rodriguez to make it a two-run contest with loaded bases. Unfortunately, the Warriors got the last out they needed which left three on base to end the game, handing FMU a heartbreaking 8-6 loss in the series finale.

FMU pitcher Carlos Solano (1-4) was credited with the loss, allowing nine hits and four earned runs in five innings on the mound for the Lions. Binger, Okla. native Jacob Williams came in relief, allowing two hits and one earned run in his two innings pitched. Junior Jamal Johnson finished on the mound and in two innings allowed two hits. Each FMU pitcher struck out one Warrior.

The loss drops FMU to 16-20 on the year and 5-15 in conference play.

The Lions return to action Thursday, April 18, where they'll host Fort Lauderdale for game one of the final home series of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.
