Lions squander lead late in 2-1 loss in Battle of Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University's women's soccer team was less than 10 minutes away from the win against St. Thomas University, but two late goals by the Bobcats handed FMU a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in the Battle of Miami Gardens.

FMU struck first in the 34th minute, when senior Irati Elorduy found the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.. FMU held the lead for much of the match and looked to cruise to a victory, but STU tied the match with a goal in the 83rd minute. Just three minutes later, the Bobcats struck again with their second goal to propel them over FMU and hand the Lions the 2-1 defeat at Autonation Field.

FMU goalkeeper Lucia Martinez Garcia had six saves in the contest.. FMU had six shots on the night, led by the duo of Eider Alcorta Saenz and Elorduy with two apiece. 

The loss drops FMU to 4-2 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.

The Lions return to action Wednesday, September 25, where they'll host Keiser University in conference action. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dr. Lester Brown Park.
