FMU baseball takes 2 of 3 from Fort Lauderdale in weekend series

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | The Florida Memorial University baseball team took two games out of three against Fort Lauderdale, taking the weekend series at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.

The Lions trailed 2-0  in the fourth inning before scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Armando Ramirez produced an RBI-single that scored Pheron Charlton. However, the Eagles scored two additional runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 4-1 lead late in the contest.

FMU responded in the bottom stanza when Jason Ramos took advantage of a wild pitch and scored a run, cutting the deficit to two runs.

In the seventh inning, Daniel Lopez generated an RBI that scored Ramirez, then moments later, freshman Marquis Clarke produced an RBI that brought home Christopher Marte for the game-tying run.

In the eighth inning, FMU took the lead when senior Ernie Farrell generated an RBI-double to right field, scoring Kidane Stephens for the game-winning run. Later in the inning, the Lions added an insurance run when Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly-RBI to left field which brought home Farrell.

FMU pitcher William Hiciano got the start, striking out a season-high eight batters in 5.1 innings of work while allowing two earned runs and five hits, but it was relief pitcher Brandon Roman who earned the win, allowing no earned runs and two hits in just 1.2 innings of work. He replaced relief pitcher Jamal Johnson who struck out three batters and allowed no earned runs in two innings pitched.

FMU returns to the diamond on Friday, February 28 as they face Fort Lauderdale in a rematch. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Lauderhill, Fla.
