MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University's home opener will be one for the history books, as the Lions defeated RV Cumberland 24-19 for the first win under head coach Michael Jones. The Lions controlled the game from start to finish, making big plays on both sides of the ball, giving the Phoenix headaches for all four quarters.

Starting quarterback David Buggs led the Lions' offense with precision, going 18/26 for 235 yards, including a highlight 72-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalen Holly, who finished the day with six catches for 113 yards. Standout running back Jerodd Sims dominated on the ground, with 17 attempts for 123 yards and two touchdowns, helping FMU maintain a lead throughout the game.

On defense, senior Jakai Linwood made the most tackles for FMU with eight, including seven solo tackles, causing headaches for the Phoenix all day long. FMU was a regular presence in the Phoenix's backfield, with four sacks on the day, with teammates Erron Brown, Ahmaud Jordan, Jayden Haynes, and Mikhail Zysek splitting the workload with one sack apiece.

FMU kicker Sean Egloff went perfect in the game, making the Lions' lone field goal and 3/3 on PATs.

The win is the first of the season for FMU, moving them to 1-2 on the season

The Lions return to action Saturday, October 4, when they'll travel to Lakeland to take on No. 11 Southeastern for the conference opener. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Victory Field.
