MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University dominated Florida National at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field, taking both games 6-0, and 10-1 to open the series.
Game 1: FMU 6-0 FNU
Left fielder
Don McKnight III kicked off the scoring with an RBI-double that scored catcher Roy Sobrino in the bottom of the second. Third baseman
Wilber Puertas continued the scoring with an RBI that scored right fielder
Armando Ramirez an inning later. The sixth inning saw Sobrino send home first baseman
Justin Martinez, off a sacrifice RBI. Short stop
Nathan Martinez hit an RBI-single that sent designated hitter
Gregory Leal to home plate for FMU's fourth run of the day. Leal followed that with an RBI-double that scored
Justin Martinez in the seventh inning, before
Nathan Martinez's RBI in the eighth scored center fielder,
Pheron Charlton, for the sixth and final run for FMU.
Freshman
Wade Francis got the win pitched all nine innings for the Lions, allowing three hits and striking out 11 Conquistadors.
Game 2: FMU 11-1 FNU
Scoring kicked off immediately, after Charlton stole home in the first inning.
Justin Martinez hit an RBI-single that scored Ramirez shortly after, followed by a 2 RBI-triple from McKnight that sent home
Justin Martinez and Puertas. The first inning was capped off when second baseman
Christian Carratala singled up the middle to score McKnight. FNU scored their lone run of the game in the top of the second, before
Justin Martinez extended the Lions lead with a 3 RBI-homer that sent Puertas and Charlton around the diamond as well. McKnight sealed the deal shortly after with his own home run that sent Sobrino home along with him.
Senior
Jamal Johnson got the victory, allowing one hit and one run, while striking out eight Conquistadors in five innings pitched. Freshman
Marwan Khatib finished the game for FMU, striking out three Conquistadors.
The wins move FMU to 5-5 on the season.
The Lions return to action Friday, February 27, for the series-ending doubleheader against FNU. First pitch is slated for noon at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field. Purchase tickets using
