MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University Athletics has announced the hiring of Wilbert D. Johnson as the new Assistant Athletic Director for Student Success & Compliance, a key leadership role responsible for overseeing student-athlete academic success, eligibility certification, and institutional compliance within the department.
Returning home to the institution where his legacy began, Johnson returns to his alma mater with a strong background in collegiate athletics and student-athlete development gained through his experience as a student-athlete, coach, and athletics professional. In this role, he will help lead initiatives that support the academic achievement, retention, and overall success of FMU's student-athletes while ensuring compliance with NAIA, conference, and institutional regulations.
A proud FMU alumnus, Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Florida Memorial University and brings valuable experience working with studentathletes both on and off the field. His background in athletics, leadership, and mentorship
aligns with FMU Athletics' commitment to developing student-athletes who excel academically, athletically, and personally. Johnson also holds a historic place in the university's athletics legacy. As a track & field student-athlete, he became Florida Memorial University's first All-American and won a national championship in the 400-meter hurdles in 1989, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Lions athletics program. His achievements helped establish a standard of excellence that continues to inspire future generations of FMU student-athletes.

In his new role, Johnson will work closely with coaches, faculty, and campus leadership to monitor academic progress, support eligibility certification processes, and strengthen systems that ensure student-athletes remain on track toward graduation while competing at a high level. Johnson's return to FMU reflects the university's continued commitment to investing in leaders who understand its mission and the unique needs of its student-athletes.
