Akeem Maynard joined the FMU family as Assistant Baseball Coach in November of 2022
Akeem Maynard was born in Miami, FL, and raised on the Virgin Islands. At five years old, Akeem’s Dad, Ellerton Maynard, transitioned back to the island of St. Croix, completing his Minor League Baseball career with the Seattle Mariners. On the island, Akeem cultivated a love and passion for the game. Being around his dad and other professionally signed players on the island, he gathered information from other players and coaches.
Growing up on the island from childhood, Akeem was selected to represent his country team against other teams such as Puerto Rico, Mexico, Curaçao, Mexico, and Venezuela. After high school, Akeem raised his hand to join the military, where he spent eight years serving his country, completing a sea tour, an Afghanistan tour, and an overseas tour. While overseas in Spain, he played on the military team, representing the United States across Europe, where they played in Madrid, Barcelona, Ireland, and Portugal while winning an MVP award. After winning the MVP, Akeem was selected to play with the All Military Team back in the States to represent the best of the best military in Florida.
After playing in Florida for the Military, he played for the Virgin Islands Olympic team that qualified for the Olympic Games in the Dominican Republic, where they played against Dominican Republic & Netherlands.
After the Olympic experience, Akeem decided to hang up the cleats and get into the life of coaching. In coaching his year at Florida Memorial University, he’s broken the school hit record along with increases in OPS, Slugging, and Average across the board. Akeem has also produce hitters on the professional level such 2022 Mets Future Star Mark Vientos, 2022 Cubs Arizona Fall League BJ Murray, Marlins #12 Prospect Xavier Edwards, and 2022 Phillies Draftee Cade Fergus.
