Clavens Charles joined the FMU family in April of 2019 as defensive back coach. He left in June of 2022 before returning in January of 2023 as athletic operations manager running backs coach.
Charles is a trusted recruiter, coach, and operations leader who brings energy, precision, and a clear sense of purpose to Florida Memorial University. He currently serves as Running Backs Coach, Co-Head Flag Football Coach, and Athletic Operations Manager — roles that reflect both his versatility and the respect he’s earned across the department.
Charles was rehired at FMU in January 2023 by then AVP and Director of Athletics Jason Horn, who saw his ability to connect with athletes, manage details, and drive culture. “Clavens is one of the most authentic recruiters I’ve worked with,” Horn said. “He builds trust quickly, sees potential others miss, and helps student-athletes become the best version of themselves — on and off the field.”
Originally joining FMU in 2019 as Defensive Backs Coach, Charles left briefly to serve as Director of Athletics at ASA College before returning in a broader leadership role. His coaching journey started in Miami, where he was a multi-position standout at Southwest Miami High School and later played at several collegiate programs before earning his Communications degree from Texas A&M Kingsville.
He’s coached at South Miami High School and ASA College, where he helped launch Miami’s first junior college football program. At FMU, Charles has helped recruit and develop multiple All-Sun Conference players, including Division I transfers who’ve found success and leadership roles under his guidance.
Charles coaches with a focus on discipline, development, and building trust — helping athletes grow on and off the field. He’s built strong recruiting ties across South Florida and beyond, consistently bringing in talent that fits FMU’s mission.
In his operations role, Charles ensures the program runs smoothly — from team logistics to mentoring young coaches. He leads with integrity and puts people first. His values show up in how he coaches, communicates, and builds relationships — making him a key part of FMU’s culture and continued growth.
