Christopher C. McComb joined Lion Nation in the fall of 2021 as head track and field coach for the men's and women's programs at Florida Memorial University. In just a short time, he has had an impact in Miami Gardens, producing 12 indoor all-conference athletes, eight outdoor all-conference athletes, two indoor NAIA national qualifiers and one All-American long jumper on the men's side. On the women's side, McComb produced 16 indoor all-conference athletes, 22 outdoor all-conference athletes, two national indoor qualifiers and eight national outdoor qualifiers.
"I came to Florida Memorial University to change the culture of track and field to a winning attitude," said McComb.
Prior to coming to FMU, McComb was head coach for cross country and track and field for both boys and girls at Miramar High School from 2013-2021. He guided the Patriots’ boys’ team to a 2017 Boys State Track and Field Championship, a 2018 State Runner-Up finish, one regional championship, and six total district titles – including five consecutive crowns from 2017-2021. He also led the girls’ program to two district titles.
He also coached individual state champions: Taylor Banks (2019) 100-meter dash 10.26 and 200-meter dash 20.99; Terrence Horne Jr. (2018) 100-meter dash 10.29; and Jamal Walton (2017) 200-meter dash 20.57 and 400-meter run.
McComb also coached several other athletes that went on to compete on the college level at some of the best NCAA Division-I colleges in the country.
In 2017, Jamal Walton ran 44.99 in the 400-meter dash at the Pan-America Games in Peru, becoming the first high schooler to do so since 1982. Under McComb’s coaching, Walton qualified for the 2017 World Track and Field Championships in London, representing the Cayman Islands.
In 2011, McComb assisted in the physical development and training at Florida International University as a Graduate Assistant. He worked with the strength and conditioning staff, working with football and track and field.
In 2009, McComb served as the head girls track and field coach at Freedom High School (Fla.). He turned the team around within a year, guiding numerous athletes qualify to the State Championship in multiple events.
In 2007, he worked with Bommarito Performance formerly known as Perfect Competition as a Sports Performance Coach. During his time, he worked with athletes from high school, college, and NFL athletes on their speed and strength. He was able to assist in the training of Fred Taylor, Samari Rolle, Plaxico Burress, Byron Leftwich, and many other top athletes.
In 2006, McComb took over as the head boys and girls cross country and track and field coach at Miami Killian High School (Fla.). and guided the team to a top-five finish at the Florida High School Athletic Association meet. While leading Killian, McComb was able to coach future NFL running back Lamar Miller and Eugene Williams.
From 2003-2005, McComb worked as an intern strength coach for the University of Miami’s football program, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the University of South Florida.
As an athlete, McComb began his collegiate career at Alabama A&M University, where he competed in track and field. He then moved on to attend school at the University of South Florida and graduated from the University of Tampa with a bachelor’s degree in science; later he attended University of Florida and Florida International University for graduate school.
He has USATF Level I and II and USA Weightlifting Certification. He has been awarded the Miami Herald and Sun-Sentinel Coach of the Year along with the Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year.
McComb has been in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for over 21 years and is actively serving with 3rd Force Reconnaissance Company. He is the proud father of two children, Brianna and Carter.
