Florida Memorial Women's Basketball team used full-court pressure to pull away and defeat Ave Maria University 50-36 in conference play at Tom Golisano Fieldhouse on the campus of Ave Maria University. Florida Memorial picks up their eight win of the season to improve to 8-11 and 6-3 in the conference. With the win, Florida Memorial University completes a sweep of Ave Maria University.
The Lady Lions opened the game on a 10-1 run in the first half, but Ave Maria cut into FMU's lead and trailed by 5 at the end of the quarter. FMU stretched the lead to 22-13 with 3:38 left in the half. The back and forth continued throughout the half, with the Lady Lions holding a 25-15 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Florida Memorial mounted their largest lead, 33-21 with 3:21 to play. But Ave Maria would not go quietly and fought back and forth with Florida Memorial. FMU went 15-for-53 from the floor and out-shot Ave Maria 28 to 22 percent, while out-rebounding their opponent by a 47-36 margin. The Lady Lions shot 25 % from the three point line.
Abreona Cabell led the Lady Lions with 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Victoria Jones poured in 9 points and grabbed 1 rebound, while Andrisia Sweeting contributed 9 points.
Florida Memorial returns to action on Saturday evening when they head to Warner for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
