The Lady Lions basketball team of Florida Memorial University (2-0, 0-0 TSC) took on Edward Waters College at the FMU Wellness Center on Saturday.
With the score tied 3-3, the Lady Lions went on a 13 point run and jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter . The run was made possible by some timely steals by
Tyesha Battle and Ahleign Gary. At the end of the first quarter the Lady Lions would be in the lead 25-22.
In the second quarter, Edward Waters would tie the score at 28-28 but the Lady Lions would go on a six point run on two three pointers, one by
Kanesha Battle and the other by
Tyesha Battle. This run is what sparked the Lady Lions to close out the first half with the score 41-37.
Early in the third quarter, the Tigers of Edward Waters would take the lead 45-41. The Lady Lions were not having any of that as they went on a 15-4 run and open up a ten point lead with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Tigers would not go away that easily as they clawed their way back to within 2 points. The score at the end of the third quarter was 68-66.
The Tigers were determined to make a game out of it as they retook the lead early in the fourth quarter 70-68. The lead change ignited the Lady Lions and with the help of back to back three pointers by
Unique Tate and Tyesha Batle, the score was 76-70 with almost eight minutes to play. The Lady Lions would play suffocating defense as they would not allow another point scored from the Tigers for nearly four minutes and build a commanding 86-72 lead. The Lions would close out the Tigers 89-77 as they were led by
Tyesha Battle with twenty-two points, Kenesha Battle had nineteen points, and
Unique Tate had seventeen points.
The Lady Lions will be on the road as they go to New Orleans for the Xavier University Tournament next Saturday, Nov. 3rd.
