The Florida Memorial University women's basketball Lady Lions (2-1) traveled to New Orleans to participate in the Xavier University of Louisiana Classic Tournament.
The Lady Lions came out and ready to compete against the Xavier University of Louisiana Gold Nuggets women's basketball (2-0). The Gold Nuggets jumped out on top of the Lady Lions early in the first quarter as they built a 10-5 lead. The Lady Lions would roar back with the help of
Unique Tate scoring five unanswered points to tie the score at 10-10. With the score tied 15-15, Lady Lions Angeline Tirone would get a defensive rebound that led to a fast break and a score from
Nashley Zayas to give FMU a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, a three pointer from Kenesha Battle would give the Lady Lions a 20-17 lead but it was short lived. The Gold Nuggets of Xavier University of Louisiana would come back to score twenty-three points and tighten up their defense by only allowing FMU to score fourteen points in this quarter to take a 37-31 into the half.
In the third quarter the Lady Lions would tighten up on defense and keep the Gold Nuggets to only scoring fifteen points in this quarter. The Lady Lions came into the game averaging over ninety points but would only score fifteen in the third quarter as the Gold Nuggets would play smothering defense and keep the Lions from getting any momentum. The score at the end of the third quarter was 51-46 in favor of Xavier.
Early in fourth quarter Xavier would open up a 57-46 lead and not look back. The Gold Nuggets' defense would prove to be too much for the Lady Lions as they were only able to score twelve points. The Gold Nuggets would close out the Lady Lions 76-58.
Leading the way for the Lady Lions was the double double from
Ashleign Gary with eleven rebounds and eleven points.
