FMU Lady Lions Defeat JWU in Straight Sets

Florida Memorial University women's volleyball team (11-13, 4-11 TSC) took on the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University on Wednesday night at the FMU Wellness Center. The Lady Lions were celebrating senior night as it was Jazmin Molina's last home game of her career.

The Lady Lions came into the match on a four game losing streak and things started out slow as Johnson and Wales came out strong and built a 17-9 lead. For the Wildcats, Sharell Nairn had six kills to start the first set. After a time out from FMU's Coach Alvarez the Lady Lions seemed to get the offense in rhythm. With Jazmin Molina at the service line she took the Lady Lions on a six point run to close to within 2 points. The Lady Lions had three aces and hit at a .156 hitting percentage in the first set as they were able to come from behind and win 25-23.

In the second set the Lady Lions hit a .318 hitting percentage compared to .080 for the Wildcats. With the score 13-9, FMU sent Sammyra Albarran to the service line and she took the Lady Lions on a five point run to open up a 18-9 lead. FMU had a side-out efficiency of sixty-six percent compared to JWU's forty-two percent and captured the second set 25-15.

During the third set, Ivana Maric had three clutch kills to get things going for FMU. Jazmin Molina, Francheska Rivera, and Alanis Santana had a combined thirteen service points to pace the Lady Lions. FMU had a .276 hitting percentage compared to JWU's .037 and captured the third set 25-20.

The Lady Lions sent off their lone senior with a victory as Jazmin Molina led the team with twenty-three digs, seventeen service points, and four aces. This victory sets the school record for most victories in a single season.

The Lady Lions will be on the road as they travel to Lakeland to take on Southeastern and Faulkner University on Saturday, Nov. 3rd.
