The Lady Lions of Florida Memorial University (4-3, 1-0 TSC) defeated St. Thomas University (2-3, 0-1 TSC) 77-75.
The Lady Lions took on the Bobcats of St. Thomas University in The Sun Conference match up to open up conference play in the 2018-2019 campaign on Saturday afternoon at the FMU Wellness Center. St. Thomas would possess the opening tip off and immediately take it to the hoop but an FMU player came from behind to strip the ball before she could put up the layup. The Bobcats would in bound the ball and quickly hit a 3 pointer. The Bobcats would quickly build a 10-5 lead within the first few minutes of the game. The Lady Lions would battle back and tie the score at 12-12. With STU up by 1 Bri Battle hit a 3 pointer that would put the Lady Lions up 15-13 and they would not look back. The Lady Lions offense was clicking on all cylinders in the first quarter and scored 30 points and STU would only score 17.
In the second quarter the Bobcats would make some adjustments on defense and press the Lady Lions. This allowed STU to close the gap in what started to look like a blow out. With the score 40-35 in favor of the Lady Lions the Bobcats Samara Auguste stole the ball and pushed it up the floor passing it to Keiana Brooks who would assist Destiny Wilson with a 3 pointer to get within 2 points of the Lady Lions. The first half would end with the Lady Lions in the lead 44-39. Bri Battle would score 16 points and Kenesha Battle would score 12. The Lady Lions shot 54% from 3 point range and 52% from the field. The Bobcats scored 22 points in the second quarter compared to the Lady Lions' 14.
The third quarter was much closer as both teams shot 40% from the field and FMU scored 18 points while STU scored 17. The difference in this quarter was the Lady Lions, who shot 62% from the 3 point arc, while STU shot 25%. The score after 3 quarters of basketball was FMU 62 and STU 56.
The fourth quarter was where all the action would happen. Both teams battled back and forth. The Lady Lions would lead for most of this quarter but one could see the Bobcats not go away easily and battle their way back. With just under one minute to play STU would tie the score at 75-75 with a 3-point shot from Samara Auguste. The Lady Lions, Coach Stanback would quickly call a timeout to get one more play on offense. The winning play came from
Ashleign Gary as she hit a jumper with less than 10 seconds to play. This put the Lady Lions up by 2 points and the last play belonged to STU while the Lady Lions had to play one more defensive possesion to secure the victory. STU had a wide open shot just a few feet from the basket, but Kenesha Battle secured the victory with a block.
Leading the way for the Lady Lions was Bri Battle with 25 points and Kensha Battle with 22 points and a very important block.
