Lady Lions Defeat Xavier University of Louisiana

The Lady Lions of Florida Memorial University (5-3, 1-0 TSC) defeated the Golden Nuggets of Xavier University of Louisiana 81-71.

The Lady Lions were on a mission to avenge an early season loss at the hands of Xavier University. The Lady Lions started out in this game very sloppy. The Golden Nuggets came out strong and forced the Lady Lions into turnovers, mistakes, and missed shots. The Lady Lions shot just 21% from the field and 1-9 from behind the three point arc. After the first quarter the score was 21-9 in favor of Xavier University. 

"Just trust the process, run your plays, just like we practiced", said Coach Stanback to his players after the first quarter. The Lady Lions listened and the results payed off. They scored 26 points compared to the Golden Nuggets 13. The Lady Lions shot 53% from the field and 62% from behind the 3 point arc in the second quarter. This allowed the Lady Lions to take a one point lead, 35-34 into halftime. 

In the third quarter, the Golden Nuggets would come out strong and again force the Lady Lions into taking bad shots. However, Brittney Howard played very aggressive defense. She was matched up against bigger players all night, her aggressive play forced the Golden Nuggets into making some bad passes. Howard's aggressive play allowed the Lady Lions to stay within striking distance. At the end of three quarters the Lady Lions were down 52-55.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Lions showed their resiliency. They were determined to accomplish the mission that they originally started with. They outscored Xavier 28-16 in the fourth quarter by shooting 57% from behind the three point arc and a perfect 16-16 from the charity stripe. The Lady Lions secured the victory, 81-71. The Lady Lions shot 92% from thr free throw line, 41% from the three point line, and 35% from the field. 

The Lady Lions were led by Tyesha Battle with 21 points and Bri Battle with 17 points. 

The Lady Lions will be on the road Friday, November 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. at Keiser University, to take on Marian University.
