On Saturday night at the FMU Wellness Center the Florida Memorial University Lions (1-8, 0-3 TSC) took on the Mariners of College of Coastal Georgia (9-3, 5-0 TSC) in a men's conference basketball game.
The Mariners came into the game ranked number one in The Sun Conference with a perfect 4-0 record and looking to make it five in a row. The Lions are currently tied for the last spot in the conference. In the first half the Mariners scored the first points and never looked back as they led the entire game. They would build a 30-15 point lead on the Lions but the Lions would roar back to stay close behind
Jordan Martin's aggressive play getting them to within 6 points, 24-30. However, that was not enough as the Mariners would go on a 11-3 run and build up their lead again 27-41. The first half would end with the Lions trailing by 14 points, 37-51. Their first half numbers were 35% from the field and 27% from three point range.
The Lions limited their turnovers in this game to only 9, this was a big difference for them coming off their last game with 17 turnovers. The Lions worked hard in practice at limiting those turnovers and the progress showed. However, the second half was much like the first half as the Mariners would score in bunches and the the closes that the Lions could get was within 13 points. At one point the Mariners led as much as 27 points. With 4 Mariners in double digit scoring it proved to be too much for the Lions to overcome.
The bright spots for the Lions in this game were
Omar Outar and
Jordan Martin. Outar had 29 points, shooting 50% from the field and 43% from three point range. The aggressive offensive play from
Jordan Martin allowed him to score 27 points for the Lions, 14 of those points came from the free throw line.
Catch the Lions on Thursday, Dec. 6th. at the FMU Wellness Center, at 8:00 p.m. as they take on Johnson and Wales University.
