The Florida Memorial University Lady Lions (8-4, 4-0 TSC) took on the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats (3-7, 0-5 TSC) in a crosstown, conference, match-up on Thursday night at the FMU Wellness Center.
The Lady Lions came out sluggish to start this game. The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-2 lead midway through the first quarter until
Tyesha Battle hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to get things going for the Lady Lions. The Lady Lions would use that shot to gain some momentum score 22 points in the first quarter. After some adjustments and a quick talk by Coach Stanback, the Lady Lions went on a shooting rampage scoring 36 points in the second quarter. Leading the way in the first half was Bri Battle with 23 points and
Anjelie Tirone with 5 rebounds. Tirone's aggressive play in the post for the second game in a row seemed to be a big factor for the Lady Lions. The score at the half was Lady Lions 58 and the Wildcats 36.
The Lady Lions picked up right where they left off, scoring 33 points in the third quarter. The offensive explosion initially sparked by
Tyesha Battle's 3-pointer in the first quarter led to the Lady Lions scoring their second highest output of the season, 106 points. "Although we scored that many points, I wish we would have shot more efficiently", said Coach Stanback. "I think that the stress of final exams, holiday travel plans, end of semester, and preparations to start a new semester had an impact in how we executed our shots tonight." Despite all of their stresses and life lessons these young ladies were able to capture their fourth conference victory in as many tries by a score of 106-77.
Leading the way for the Lady Lions was Bri Battle with 29 points,
Tyesha Battle with 22 points, and
Kanesha Battle with 21 points.
Anjelie Tirone finished the night with 11 rebounds and 9 points.
The Lady Lions will travel to West Palm Beach to take on Keiser University on Saturday, Dec. 8th, at 2:00 p.m.
