The Tigers of Voorhees College (9-10) traveled from South Carolina to Florida Memorial University to participate in the 2019 MLK Classic.
The Lady Lions of Florida Memorial University (14-7, 7-3 TSC) were missing two of the Battle sisters in this game and still found a way to handle a very physical Voorhees team. Brianna and
Kanesha Battle were unavailable for this game as they were nursing injuries and they left the youngest sister, Tyesha to handle the load for them. In the first quarter, things started out slow for the Lady Lions only scoring 15 points. The absence of the two sisters took the Lady Lions a little getting used to,
Tyesha Battle only had 4 points in the first half. The Lady Lions were more efficient in the 2nd quarter scoring 21 points and building a 6 point lead at the half, 36-28. In the first half The Lady Lions shot 31% from the field and 22% from 3-point range.
In the third quarter, the Lady Lions scored 23 points but gave up 21 points as Voorhees tried to use their obvious hight advantage against the Lady Lions. However, the physical play from Voorhees resulted in more fouls. The Lady Lions shot 83% (20-24) from the free-throw line, after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, the Tigers of Voorhees continued their aggressive play and the result was even more fouls. In the fourth quarter alone, the Lady Lions attempted 21 free-throws, making 19 of them. For the game the Lady Lions were 86% (39-45) from the free-throw line. The Lady Lions were strong on the glass out rebounding the Tigers 44-42. To close out the Tigers, the Lady Lions scored an astonishing 39 points in the fourth quarter alone and captured the victory 98-72.
Leading the way for the Lady Lions was
Danielle Bailey with 23 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals.
Tyesha Battle finished the game with 20 points, she scored 11 points in the fourth quarter alone.
Ashleign Gary and
Anjelie Tirone combined for 14 rebounds and 21 points.
The Lady Lions will be on the road this Thursday, Jan. 24th as the take on Coastal College of Georgia at 5:30 p.m.
