The Lady Lions lose second straight conference road game.
The road has not been friendly to the Lady Lions of Florida Memorial University (14-9, 7-5 TSC) as they suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of Thomas University (8-16, 5-8 TSC) on Saturday afternoon at Thomasville, GA. The Lady Lions have lost five out of their last seven games. This most recent defeat drops the Lady Lions to fifth in The Sun Conference. Injuries have taken a toll on the Lady Lions, just two weeks ago they were in second place in The Sun Conference fighting for first place against Southeastern University. Since then Brianna and
Kanesha Battle have had to sit out of some games due to injuries, one with an ankle injury and the other one due to a swollen black eye (suffered by an elbow to the eye against St. Thomas University). Kanesha has since returned to the line-up and Brianna is expected back soon.
The Night Hawks led wire to wire in this game. In the first quarter, the Night Hawks opened up a four point lead and never looked back taking the first quarter 11-17. In the second quarter, the Lady Lions could not get things going as the Night Hawks opened up a seventeen point lead to close out the first half, 30-47.
In the third quarter, the Lady Lions made some adjustments and exploded on offense scoring 30 points and cut the Night Hawks lead down to four points. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Lions would continue to roar, they were able to cut the lead down to two points with just one minute to play. However, a 6-0 point run by the Night Hawks closed out the Lady Lions with the final score, 76-82. The Lady Lions shot 23-72 (29%) from the field, 13-32 (40%) from behind the 3-point arc, and 17-24 (70%) from the charity stripe. The Night Hawks owned the glass in this game out-rebounding the Lady Lions 33-49. The difference in the game were the points in the paint, as the Night Hawks scored 28 points and the Lady Lions just 16 points.
The Lady Lions will look to get healthy and improve their shooting in practice this week. Up next for the Lady Lions, a much needed home game against Keiser University on Thursday, Jan. 31st, at 6:00 p.m. at the FMU Wellness Center.
GO LIONS!!
