(MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.) -- The 2019-2020 women's basketball season got off to a great start as Florida Memorial University defeated the University of the Virgin Islands 102-47, Thursday, October 17.
The Lions led the match throughout the entire contest and got the ball rolling when senior
Shawnice King made a layup to put the first points on the board.
Sophomore
Unique Tate would score five of the next eight points to give the Lions a 10-0 advantage over the Buccaneers.
UVI would score their first basket from the free throw line after a missed attempted and bring the score back to within five after dropping a set of free throws and scoring a basket.
The Buccaneers ended the first quarter on an 8-3 run but still trailing by six.
In the second quarter FMU outscored UVI 30-6. Sophomore
Meaurie Pickett scored all 11 of her points in second quarter and help the Lions take a 53-23 lead into the half.
Florida Memorial outscored the Virgin Islands 49-24 in the second half of the game. They finished the match with a 54 percent field goal percentage and 14-28 from behind the three point line.
The Lions also went .500 from the 3-point line and finished with a to .643 at the free throw line.
Leading the way for the Lions was junior
Airneisha Gamble who finished the game with 14 points. She was one of five player that finished in double-digits with scoring including Pickett, senior
Isis Lane (12) and sophomores
Nashley Zayas (12) and Tate (10).
Lane also finished with two blocks and three rebounds while Zayas led the Lions with four assists.
The Lions return to action November 1-2 as they travel to Alabama to participate in the Faulkner University tournament.
