AVE MARIA, Fla. – Junior guard
Airneisha Gamble tied for the game-high with 17 points but she was the only Florida Memorial University player to record double-digit points as the Lions fell 77-55 to host Ave Maria University Saturday in the Sun Conference opener for both teams at the Tom Golisano Field House.
The Lions (2-4, 0-1 Sun Conference) got off to a slow start – only scoring six points in the first quarter – and never quite found their footing Saturday. Turnovers were FMU's bane. Seventeen Florida Memorial turnovers became 22 Ave Maria points and the Lions' streak of success against the Gyrenes – two consecutive wins this past season – was snapped.
Shawnice King and
Meaurie Pickett each scored eight for the Lions, who will return home and prepare for a tilt against Florida National University on Tuesday (Nov. 19), while Pickett also grabbed six rebounds. Senior
Isis Lane pulled down a team-high seven boards Saturday while playing a game-high 35 minutes.
