MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Five different Florida Memorial players scored in double-figures Tuesday, led by
Isis Lane's 19 points, as the Lions cruised to a 90-58 win over visiting Florida National University Tuesday night in the FMU Wellness Center.
The 6-foot-4 Lane had her fingerprints all over the game, recording a double-double with 15 rebounds to go along with her game-high point total. Lane also recorded three blocks and three steals Tuesday.
Lions head coach
Gregory Stanback said that he had a heart-to-heart conversation with Lane before Tuesday's game.
"We know she's a really good player, but sometimes she presses a lot and tries to do more than what we want her to do," Stanback said. "I just told that I believe in, that I trust her, and most importantly, that I love her. You have to let your players know that…it's more than basketball. I think it took her mind off of trying to do so much and just come out and just play basketball. She just played basketball tonight."
FMU, as a whole, "just played basketball" Tuesday.
Ashleign Gary turned in a solid performance off the bench for the Lions, finishing with 17 points and a board shy of registering a double-double.
Unique Tate also added 14 points off the bench,
Shawnice King had 13 points, five assists, and three rebounds in 33 minutes of action, while chipped in 12 points and a game-high seven assists.
The Lions, who will be back on the road to face Sun Conference rival Webber International University on Thursday (Nov. 21), held just a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter then methodically pulled away from the Lady Conquistadors – outscoring FNU in each quarter.
Coach Stanback said that playing in front of the home fans – as a part of a women's-men's doubleheader – was important for his team Tuesday.
"It was good to be back home," Stanback said. "We were on the road [for a while] and it was good to be on our home floor again. With a big win like this, we're hoping that this game will carry over since we have two conference opponents coming up."
