MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Florida Memorial University women's basketball team was edged in the final game of the Jimmy Faulkner Classic by the host team, Faulkner University, 72-70, on Saturday.
FMU turned up the heat versus the Eagles but started to burn out in the middle of the first half. The Lady Lions led by one, 24-23, after the first quarter and finished the second quarter down five, 41-36.
Faulkner held FMU to nine points in the third quarter. The Lady Lions nearly tripled their output in the fourth, but responded too late. Down six (65-59) with 2:44 left on the clock, senior
Isis Lane drained a three. After FMU applied full court pressure, senior
Shawnice King stole the ball and kicked it out to
Airneisha Gamble for another successful 3-pointer bringing the Lady Lions within three points of the lead, 65-62, with 2:35 left in the game. This added pressure forced the Eagles into back-to-back turnovers and personal fouls.
Senior
Danielle Bailey tied the game at 65 by making a 3-point play (and one) and created a steal, which she passed off to King for an easy bucket, giving the Lady Lions a 67-65 lead.
FMU ended up outscoring the Eagles 25-14 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to secure the win.
Leading the way for FMU was Lane, who finished with a career-high 20 points and added five rebounds, and Gamble, who scored 11 points.
The Lady Lions shot 36-percent (26-of-72) from the field, 31-percent (11-of-35) from the 3-point range, and 88-percent (8-of-9) from the free-throw line.
Next week FMU will be on the road again to face HBCU rival, Edward Waters, in Jacksonville, Fla., on Friday, November 8 at 6 p.m. ET.
