BABSON PARK, Fla. – Perhaps Florida Memorial University women's basketball head coach
Gregory Stanback has a future as a motivational speaker.
The coach said he had a one-on-one conversation with senior forward
Isis Lane before Florida Memorial's game this past Tuesday, and Lane responded with a 19-point, 15-rebound double-double in a 90-58 win.
Stanback's words must have truly resonated with Lane, as she registered another double-double – scoring 17 points and snatching down 18 rebounds – in Florida Memorial's 72-66 win over host Webber International University Thursday night in the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
The 18 boards Thursday set a new season-high for the 6-foot-4 Lane and helped the Lions (4-4, 1-1) earn their first Sun Conference victory of the season.
In a game that essentially see-sawed the entire night, Florida Memorial was able to create some separation from the Warriors early in the fourth quarter. Down 55-54 with just under nine minutes to play, the Lions went on a 9-0 run that included a three-pointer by Lane. The Lady Lions were able to stave off Webber International the rest of the way – even when the Warriors cut FMU's lead to 68-66 with 49 seconds left – with clutch free throw shooting.
Airneisha Gamble shared the scoring load with Lane – tying her for the game-high of 17 points (shooting 4-of-9 from three-point range) while also grabbing four rebounds in 33 minutes of action.
Shawnice King added 15 points for the Lions, who will host Sun Conference foe Warner University Saturday at 2 p.m. in the FMU Wellness Center, while playing all 40 minutes Tuesday.
