MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Led by senior
Isis Lane's 20 points and 13 rebounds, Florida Memorial extended its winning streak to three games with a 71-52 win over visiting Warner University Saturday afternoon at the FMU Wellness Center.
It was Lane's third straight double-double for the Lions, who have registered back-to-back Sun Conference victories during the recent streak.
After trailing by four at the end of the first quarter, FMU seemingly flipped the switch and seized control of the game. The Lions held Warner University to just five points in the second quarter – outscoring the Lady Royals 15-5 in the second – and methodically extended their lead throughout the second half with stifling defense which led to easy points in transition.
Florida Memorial head coach
Gregory Stanback said his team's slow start was a product of his squad not respecting their opponent.
"Whenever you come into a game against an opponent that's been struggling, you have to be concerned with your team not being up for the game," said Stanback of his team's uninspired start against a Warner University team that came into Saturday having lost its past five games.
"You'll notice that early on I made a full five-for-five substitution to send the message that 'if you're not going to be focused and play the way we know we're supposed to play, you can have a seat'."
"Ultimately, the girls locked in and our defensive intensity picked up, which allowed us to take control of the game," Stanback said.
Lane's game-high five blocks speak to the Lions' increase in defensive activity Saturday. Florida Memorial also nabbed seven total steals while forcing 15 Warner University turnovers.
Airneisha Gamble put together another solid "floor game", finishing with 15 points but also adding seven rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
Ashleign Gary was just shy of a double-double for the second straight game, grabbing 11 boards and nine points.
There were a handful of nice bonuses inside Saturday's victory for the Lions. Aside from extending the streak and improving to 2-1 in the conference standings, Florida Memorial also moved a game over .500 and can enjoy the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday knowing it protected its home floor and is a perfect 3-0 in the Wellness Center up to this point.
