Box Score HIALEAH, Fla. – Whenever a team goes on an extended winning streak, there's bound to be a couple "ugly" wins in there.
In a game that was probably closer than Florida Memorial University women's basketball coach
Gregory Stanback would have hoped, his Lady Lions did enough to come away with a 64-53 win over host Florida National University Wednesday night in Bucky Dent Gymnasium.
FMU (6-4) earned its fourth straight victory Wednesday, knocking off the Conquistadores for the second time in as many weeks. The Lions, who will travel to conference rival St. Thomas University this coming Saturday, defeated FNU 90-58 at the FMU Wellness Center on November 19, the first win in Florida Memorial's current streak.
The Lions were shorthanded Wednesday, playing without guards
Airneisha Gamble and
Unique Tate due to illness, but got key contributions from a handful of other players.
Senior
Isis Lane continued her strong play, notching another double-double – finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday.
Shawnice King was the team's leading scorer, totaling 14 points to go along with four assists in 38 minutes of action.
Nashley Zayas added 13 points off the bench, while
Danielle Bailey and
Anjelie Tirone each finished with seven points.
Coach Stanback said that he was just glad that his team got past Wednesday with a win.
"It was tough tonight…we weren't sharp. Honestly, we weren't as sharp as I would've liked in the practices leading up to [Wednesday's game]," Stanback said. "I'm thankful that we got out of here with a win. Now we can turn our attention to St. Thomas, which is going to be a very tough game – as it always is."
