MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Some nights, just aren't your night. And all it can be chalked up to is: "it's just one of those nights".
Florida Memorial University's women basketball team had "one of those nights" Tuesday – shooting just 35.6 percent from the field and turning the ball over 24 times as visiting Texas Wesleyan handed the Lady Lions their first home loss of the season 71-54.
The Lions (7-6) had won their first four home games in the FMU Wellness Center, including upending previously unbeaten Edward Waters College, but just didn't play with the same intensity Tuesday night against a Texas Wesleyan (6-2) team that had just traveled to South Florida Tuesday morning.
FMU, which will host Cumberland University Thursday night, struggled to operate offensively against the Rams' zone defense. The Lions tried to shoot Texas Wesleyan "out of the zone" by taking available three-pointers. Florida Memorial had decent success with that strategy in the first half – going 8-of-18 from beyond the arc as they only trailed 39-33 at halftime – but it didn't work well at all in the second half, as FMU made just three of their 15 three-pointers.
Texas Wesleyan pulled away from the Lions over the final two quarters, building as large as a 20-point lead before
Meaurie Pickett hit a three-pointer just before the final buzzer.
Unique Tate shared the team-high point total with senior
Isis Lane Saturday, with each finishing with 12 points. All of Tate's points came on threes, while Lane had to manufacture her dozen on 5-of-13 shooting. Also, Lane's streak of consecutive double-doubles was snapped, as she finished with just six boards.
No other FMU player finished with double digit points. Pickeett,
Anjelie Tirone, and
Airneisha Gamble all finished with six points.
Texas Wesleyan had three players score in double figures, led by Nicole Gleason's 16 points, on a night when the Rams didn't attempt a single free throw.
