Lions Defeat Wildcats

The Florida Memorial University Lions (5-21, 3-11 TSC) defeated the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats (2-20, 2-13 TSC) at the Wildcats Center.

The Lions have officially been eliminated from the conference playoffs, instead of playing for position in the conference standings they are playing for bragging rights. On Saturday afternoon, at Johnson and Wales University the Lions earned the season sweep of the Wildcats, 80-75.

The Lions started this game a little slow but after a couple of minutes settled down and hit a couple of shots to get things going on offense. They were able to lead by as much as 17 points late in the first half and took a commanding 13 point lead to the half, 45-32.

In the second half, the Lions built a 21 point lead but the Wildcats would not go away easily. They were able to cut the lead down and actually took the lead with just over ten minutes to play. The lead would not last long as a jumper by Eugene Harvey gave the Lions the lead that they would take to the final. The Lions captured the victory 80-75 behind a strong performance from the bench out-scoring the Wildcats bench 23-13. The Lions had a slight edge in points scored in the paint, 28-24 and a slight edge in rebounds 40-38.

The Lions shot 53% from the field, 33% from 3-point range, and 86% from the charity stripe. Leading the way for the Lions was William Phelps with 26 points and 6 rebounds and Nehemiah Darrett recorded his second double-double of the season, 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Catch the Lions on Thursday, Feb. 7th, at 8:00 p.m. at the FMU Wellness Center as they take on Webber International University.
