The Lady Lions of Florida Memorial University (16-11, 9-7 TSC) traveled to Warner University to take on the Lady Royals (7-21, 0-16) on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Lions took the court with an opportunity to clinch a post season berth on the line. The Lady Lions had to knock off the Lady Royals who are winless in conference competition for an opportunity to secure a post season berth. The Lady lions did just that, defeating the Lady Royals by 14 points, 66-52.
In the first quarter, the Lady Lions came out firing and scored 29 points while keeping the Lady Royals to 14 points. In the second quarter, the Lady Royals used a pressure defense to rattle the Lady Lions offense and the effective defense kept the Lady Lions to only scoring 9 points. The score at the half was 38-27 in favor of the Lady Lions. The Lady Royals never led in this game but did compete and out-scored the Lady Lions in the paint, 22-16 and out-rebounded the Lady Lions 40-44.
In the second half, the Lady Lions would get things going again scoring 18 points in the 4th quarter alone while limiting the Royals to 25 points in the 3rd and 4th quarter combined. The Lady Lions shot 29% from the field, 24% from 3-point range, and 65% from the charity stripe. The Lady Lions did not shoot well in this game but their defense was stellar and that was the difference in this game.
The Lady Lions secured their spot in The Sun Conference tournament which will be played on Feb. 19th. The Lady Lions were led by
Anjelie Tirone with her second straight double double, 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Shawnice King scored 12 points and
Kanesha Battle scored 20 points.
The Lady Lions will travel to Southeastern University on Thursday, Feb. 14th at 5:30 p.m.
