The Lions of Florida Memorial University suffered a horrendous 7
th inning against the
Gyrenes of Ave Maria University on Wednesday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Field on the campus of Florida Memorial University.
The
Gyrenes jumped out to a 0-3 lead in the top of the 3
rd inning. The Lions picked up a run in the bottom of the 3
rd inning when center fielder
Jouseph Renovales hit a homerun over the center field wall.
The Lions were able to score a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead 4-3. The Lions took advantage of a walk, , 2 base hit, 2 stolen bases and an RBI from
Jose Chavez and
Yunior Sanchez to take the 4-3 lead.
Brandon Carter came in as a relief pitcher in the top of the sixth inning and was able to preserve the lead. However, the Lions fell apart in the top of the seventh inning. The
Gyrenes took advantage of 2 walks, a single, and a double, to regain the lead 4-5. Head coach,
Tino Burgos, pulled Carter and brought in freshman right hander,
Acier Rodriguez in hopes to get out of the inning with minimal damage but the
Gyrenes jumped all over Rodriguez.
Gabriel Cox was brought in as a relief pitcher and secured the final 2 outs of the inning. In the end, the
Gyrenes scored a total 7 runs and took a 4-10 lead and never looked back. The
Gyrenes added one more run, in the eight inning, when Cox surrendered a triple that eventually scored. The Gyrenes defeated the Lions, 4-11.
The loss drops the Lions record to 20-20, 8-13 TSC. The Lions desperately need to pick up a victory to stay ahead of Thomas University as they are not far behind them for the final spot in the conference standings. The Lions have just 3 conference games left and Thomas University has 9.
The Lions will be on the road this weekend in
Talladega, AL to take on the Tornadoes of
Talladega College.
