The Lions of Florida Memorial University took to the field this afternoon looking for victory after their trip to
Talladega, AL. They faced cross town rival, the Conquistadors of Florida National University (10-32).
The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning, when
Luis Rivera singled and
Jose Chavez doubled. The Lions held a 1-0 lead until the 5th inning when the Conquistadors scored 3 runs to take a 1-3 lead.
In the top of the 7th inning, the Conquistadors scored 4 more runs to take a commanding 1-7 lead over the Lions. Just when the Lions looked lost and defeated they came roaring back and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Lions took advantage of 5 walks as they closed the gap, 4-7.
In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Lions were determined to get back into this game and scored 3 more runs to tie things up at 7-7. A walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases for Francisco
Quinonez who hit a screaming shot down the left field line that scored 2 runs. Later in the inning the Lions would score their 3rd run when,
Raul Torres reached safely on an error by the short stop that allowed DJ Brown to score. Later in the inning, with the go-ahead run on 3rd base, the Conquistadors, intentionally walked
Luis Rivera to pitch to
Edgard Aparicio.
Aparicio had come into the game as a relief pitcher the previous inning was at the plate because Coach Burgos allowed him to hit in order to stay in the game to pitch. The Conquistadors were able to strike out
Aparicio to end the inning.
In the top of the 9th inning, the Conquistadors would take advantage of a fielding error when first baseman,
Jacques Perry, fielded a ground ball cleanly and tossed to
Aparicio who was covering first base, but he dropped the ball thus allowing the runner to score. With the score 7-8, in favor of the Conquistadors the Lions would come to bat in the bottom of the 9th inning. With Lions on first and second base, DJ Brown hit a ground ball that looked to be a routine double play to end the game but the 2nd baseman made a throwing error allowing pinch runner
Kyle Parks to score and send the game into extra
innings.
In the top of the 10th inning, the Lions would give up 2 runs on a single and back to back doubles. With the score 8-10 in favor of the Conquistadors, the Lions were due up in the bottom of the
10th. Nathan
Llanes led off for the Lions and hit a shot over the scoreboard in right field to get the Lions to within one run of the lead. Two batters later, the Lions, down to their final out, had the tying run just 90 feet away (at 3rd base) when
Edison Cabrera grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.
The loss drops the Lions record to 20-22, 8-13 TSC. The Lions will be at home for their final 3-game series of the season on Friday and Saturday, as they take on St. Thomas University. The Lions desperately need a conference victory as they are currently in 7th place in The Sun Conference standings behind Thomas University.
